Sly and the Family Stone

Space Cowboy

I knew it would happen – I was cruising through all this music because I knew at some point my ears would say “no.”  And it happened.   And then I turned into a space cadet, which is what happens when I go into phase 2 of my writing process.  And then I went into writing mode and spit about 3 songs.  So I’ve been chipping away at The List since then.  I’m not giving up though – the goal still stands.  I just need to get a move on is all.  I can do this. (She says to convince herself if no one else)

(If any of you are just joining us, I’m in the process of listening to 100 albums before my birthday.  You can start here.)

Starting from Scratch

If there is one thing I have learned that I constantly need in my life, it’s perspective. For some reason, when anything becomes even remotely challenging that’s the FIRST thing that goes. Every time.

This is why I enjoy teaching private music lessons.

Seems unrelated, I know. Just stick with me.

I had the joy of starting a brand new flute student a few months ago. I love this. You both sit on the floor cross legged and open your flute cases. You tell the new student the names of the different parts of the flute. You ask the student to put the instrument together the way they think it should be put together and then play it for you. It’s this great cozy bonding moment. One of my favorites ever.

12 Kinds of Glue

I like making stuff.  Always have.  I think I get it from my Dad, who is basically like MacGyver.  I believe I have mentioned this before.

I stopped making stuff years ago when I started consistently moving every few years.  When you make stuff, you have to own stuff in order to make other said stuff.  And when you own stuff and you have to move, that means you have a lot more stuff to carry which I just do not have the patience for.  So no more making stuff for me.

Until now.

A Few of My Favorite Things

I grounded myself for the entire month of December because I was really starting to go a little cra-cra in the head.   Mandatory time off, one might say.

So I’ve been pretty low key.  Getting a lot of sleep which is odd for me.

Something I’m enjoying (which is surprising to me)  is the local radio station, KOIT, has been playing non-stop Christmas music since the day after Thanksgiving.  Now typically I don’t get into holiday music, but the CD player in our car is broken so it’s all radio all the time which means All-Your-Favorite-Christmas-Hits-Non-Stop.

That’s where I heard Julie Andrews singing “My Favorite Things” from one of the best movies ever:  The Sound of Music.  Sigh.  I love The Sound of Music.  One may even say that it’s one of My Favorite Things.
